RISE Conference at EXPO Milano

EU EXPO OfficialParticipant RGB Transparent

22 June 2015

Milan, Italy

Organised within the framework of EXPO Milano: ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’, this conference explored Europe’s multi-purpose countryside and, specifically, how jobs and income generated through rural recreational and cultural activities could help support the environment.

One of the greatest challenges of our time is to incentivise a more sustainable management of biodiversity and the ecosystems it provides, especially in areas with limited capacity for profitable farming.

The event exemplified the environmental care role of rural land managers in both intensive food-producing areas and marginal, remote regions. Examples demonstrated how jobs and incomes can be generated through rural tourism and recreation, as well as heritage and cultural foods, thereby providing support for rural communities and the environment, and illustrating the multi-purpose of the countryside.

This event was organised by the RISE Foundation on behalf of the European Commission.
