The Future of European Crop Protection

The manner in which we protect crops against disease and competition has changed rapidly over the last century, from predominantly cultural and mechanical practices to an emphasis on the usage of plant protection products. Whilst on the one hand, this has reduced yield loss and improved product quality, thereby contributing to abundant food supplies, there is a large body of evidence detailing the range of negative impacts these products are having on the environment, and on human health. This has resulted in many questioning their role in sustainable food production.

This leads us to ask what system of crop protection we want in the future, and to discuss how we plan on supporting the agricultural sector to get there.
